Five key sounds in Stanmer Park in April
Blackcap
One of our commonest warblers, Blackaps have a rich, flutey song and have been known as the ‘northern nightingale’.
Wren
The various calls of the Wren can be heard in almost every kind of habitat, and the song is a staple of woodland in spring.
Chaffinch
Much scarcer than they used to be, but still found in the woods at Stanmer Park. The song is like a ball being thrown down wide steps.
Firecrest
Firecrests are unmistakable if you get a good look, but it’s much easier to see them when you know the song and the calls. High pitched!
Nuthatch
Nuthatches make all kinds of noises, The ‘dweep dweep’ call helps us find these dynamic treehuggers.
